Corsair 13

This section deals with the nuts & bolts of the project.

This boat has been designed as a true displacement cruiser, to travel at displacement speeds.

Cross Section.   FRAME12revisedblackwhite.jpg (36933 bytes)   Detailed cross Section.

Our chosen construction material for the project is timber. We chose this mainly because we are more comfortable with timber as a medium. Secondly, the advent of epoxy encapsulation techniques means that the timber is much less susceptible to rot. In the hull we have used spotted gum with plywood gussets for the frame with flooded gum longitudinals & kwila stem.

The hull has been designed as a monocoque (stiff & ridged) as opposed to a carvel. The hull has 3 layers of plywood (most surfaces only curve in one direction for ease of construction) screwed & glued (lots of gluing in this project) to the frame.  Over this we will apply one layer of 420 gram double bias fiberglass.

Incorporated in the deadwood will be about 3 Tonnes of lead to get the displacement up to a D/L of around 250.

The deck will be 2 layers of plywood, fibreglassed over as for the hull, with cork flooring to the cockpit & side decks up to the step. Forward deck to be painted non-slip.

Superstructure is timber framed, with plywood cladding, covered with fiberglass.
